LIFE & THYME — A preview of the taste food festival — by Antonio Diaz
As much as I love meeting people from other cities, Los Angeles will always have a special place in my heart. The food scene feels like home and it gives me joy whenever I find out that something new is happening. The community here is close-knit, but always welcoming of new friends. So, naturally, we were thrilled when the Los Angeles Times’ invited us to their Test Kitchen for a preview of their upcoming food festival, The Taste, at Paramount Pictures.
The Taste—which will be held on Labor Day weekend—celebrates the very best of Los Angeles’ food culture. From the world-renowned, to the up-and-coming, The Taste will feature an extensive list of chefs, bakers, restaurants, wine makers, cocktails, and plenty more.
It was my first time visiting the LA Times’ building in downtown Los Angeles. More than anything, I was excited to visit their Test Kitchen and meet some of the upcoming players for The Taste festival. Oh, and stuff my face with delicacies, of course.
Upon entering the building, Life & Thyme filmmaker Ben Hunter and I were greeted by other food writers and bloggers that focus on the food space. We were then escorted upstairs to the Test Kitchen to taste an amazing menu of small bites and drinks that would be featured at the actual event. The hosts for the night were Noelle Carter, the LA Times Test Kitchen director, and Russ Parsons, LA Times food editor and columnist for the past 20 years. They introduced us to the group of participants that were graciously providing tastings of their incredible creations:
Dog Haus: Pastrami sausage hot dog with gruyere cheese sauce, haus-made coleslaw with a Russian dressing on top. Followed by a spicy Thai sausage dog with crispy fried onions, tomato, avocado, arugula, and a spicy basil aioli served on a grilled Hawaiian bread.
The Taste will be held August 30th to September 1st. Be sure to purchase a ticket and come say hi to us when we’re not busy eating all of the food.
