DRINK PLAY GRUB — Dog Haus Debuts in Santa Ana
Dog Haus, the celebrated Los Angeles-based concept known for its gourmet hot dogs, sausages, burgers, and one-of-a-kind creations, has opened its first Orange County franchise restaurant in Santa Ana.
Located at the Westfield MainPlace Mall, the restaurant from franchisee Ryan Welch, a military veteran who served for 10 years overseas, is the 7th location of the emerging brand.
The SoCal-based concept was originally founded in 2010 by Partners and friends André Vener, Hagop Giragossian and Quasim Riaz to recapture the nostalgic childhood experience of eating a hot dog.
“From the moment I first met André, Hagop and Quasim, I knew that they had a ton of integrity and would support my need to give back to the people and organizations in which I believe.” Says Welch,
“After completing my service and returning home to start a family, I was inspired by their vision and the opportunity they afforded me to begin a new chapter in my life. Santa Ana is just the first of many of my franchise locations where I will extend that opportunity to other veterans – hiring and training them as an integral part of my business philosophy.”
As part of the mall’s ambitious renovation plans, Welch’s first Dog Haus restaurant offers locals a new craft casual hangout perfect for a quick post-shopping lunch or family-friendly night on the town with the critically acclaimed dogs, sausages and burgers that have put the hot brand on the map both locally in Southern California and on a national basis with praise from Food & Wine, CNN, Nation’s Restaurant News, and Entrepreneur Magazine. Described as “the hot dog of the future” by Fast Company Magazine, Dog Haus aims to elevate and reinvent classics through high quality ingredients, unique combinations and chef-driven preparations that have included everything from a seasonal turducken sausage to limited availability foie gras fries.
Now that the restaurant is officially up and running, Orange County residents can enjoy Dog Haus’ updated takes on these All-American favorites served up on grilled King’s Hawaiian rolls.
Dog Haus’ all beef skinless dogs include the cult favorite Haus Dogs Sooo Cali with arugula, tomato, crispy onions, spicy basil aioli and avocado; the Downtown Dog featuring a smoked bacon wrapped dog topped with caramelized onions, sautéed bell peppers, mayo, mustard, and ketchup; and The Cowboy with white American cheese, smoked bacon, bbq sauce, and crispy onions.
In addition to the dogs, diners also have the option of enjoying gourmet sausages, burgers, corn dogs, sides and even the newest menu addition — the Motley Bleu 2.0, a spiced up version of their original bleu cheese burger with soy-racha onions, bleu sriracha sauce, white american cheese, bacon, lettuce and tomato.
Haus Sausages include The Fonz with spicy Italian sausage, pastrami and melted mozzarella; while Another Night in Bangkok features a spicy thai red currywurst sausage, peanut sauce, crunchy asian slaw, and crushed peanuts. Haus Burgers run the gamut from the trademarked The Freiburger® with white american cheese, a fried egg, haus slaw, fries and mayo; to the Holy Aioli with white american cheese, caramelized onions, smoked bacon, and garlic aioli. Ambitious diners can also opt to build their own dog, sausage or burger with the wide array of accoutrements available. Lighter eaters and kids can indulge in smaller-sized portions – the Dog slider is made with an allbeef mini dog, haus-made cheese sauce, shredded cheddar and bacon; the Burger slider has just the right amount of caramelized onions, white american cheese, and mayo; while the Corn Dog slider features an all-beef mini dog dipped in haus-made root beer batter.
Equal attention is paid to the quality-driven sides, like Chili Cheese Tots or fresh-cut, twicefried Fries with haus-made cheese sauce, cheddar, haus chili, and diced onions and beerbattered Onion Rings. To end the meal on a sweet note, a list of premium desserts includes shakes & malts, soft serve, and cookies.
To complement the main offerings, diners will soon be able to select from wine and a thoughtful list of beers available on tap as well as canned.
This March, Dog Haus Santa Ana will debut a self-serve beer system from I Pour It, an Orange County-based company, that will boast four interactive touch screen taps offering rotating local brews including Cismontane Brewing Company, Nobel Ale Works, and The Bruery. This system gives customers the opportunity to customize their drinking experience whether that means pouring a number of 1oz samplers or filling a 16oz pint to wash down their dog. Those who opt for a canned beer can enjoy options like Moose Drool, Pabst Blue Ribbon and The Dudes all served up in Dog Haus koozies – a nod to backyard summer BBQs and tailgating. The fast-casual concept combines an old-school vibe with a cutting-edge, modern design aesthetic.
After ordering at the counter, diners choose from communal seating or private tables made from wood and steel that span the perimeter of the 2,200 square-foot restaurant. Striking red and black accents and playful expressions such as “The Absolute Wurst” and “Sweet Buns” punctuate both the interior and the 925 square foot canopied outdoor seating area.
