TOPANGA MESSENGER ONLINE — How's Business? The New Haute Dog is in the Dog Haus Canoga Park
July is National Hot Dog Month, just in time to enjoy summertime fun at the newly arrived Dog Haus Canoga Park.
Located at 6501 Topanga Canyon (just north of Victory Blvd. and across from the Westfield Topanga Mall), the restaurant from franchisee Paul Homayoun will be the fourth location of the emerging brand, which has plans for more than 50 additional locations to open throughout California, Colorado and Utah in the months to come, with more in the pipeline as the concept continues to grow beyond its SoCal home.
This is the first franchise of the celebrated Pasadena-based concept known for its gourmet hot dogs, sausages and burgers. When it opened its doors on June 14, the line was halfway up the block, so my friend and I came back for an early dinner. The Dog Haus' classic all-beef skinless dog offerings are all served up on grilled King’s Hawaiian rolls.
My friend chose the “Sooo Cali” Haus Turkey Dog with arugula, tomato, crispy onions, spicy basil aioli and avocado. Sooo delicious and came with house fries, also delicious. They also serve sweet potato fries.
I might have chosen “Das Brat Haus Sausage” that features a bratwurst with caramelized onions, kraut, white American cheese, and whole grain mustard aioli, but on the recommendation of our server, I tried “The Pig and The Fig,” emmentaler stuffed sausage, fig and onion relish, wild arugula, whole grain mustard and sliced almonds. All those unexpected flavors collided in an exciting taste experience.
We also sampled two other menu offerings: “Another Night in Bangkok,” a Thai-inspired spicy Thai red currywurst with peanut sauce, asian slaw and crushed peanuts; and the trademarked “The Freiburger®” with white American cheese, a fried egg, haus slaw, fries and mayo that was another delectable surprise made with 100 percent natural Black Angus beef burgers on grilled King’s Hawaiian Rolls.
Open for lunch and dinner daily, guests can choose from signature Haus creations or customize their own from a selection of more than 40 quality toppings.
To pair with their dogs, diners can order fare from Dog Haus' full menu, which is rounded out with gourmet sausages, burgers, corndogs and sides—each prepared with the highest quality ingredients.
Lighter appetites and kids can indulge in slider-sized portions, from a Burger with caramelized onions, white American cheese, and mayo; a Corn Dog featuring an all-beef mini dog dipped in root beer batter.
Equal attention is paid to the quality-driven sides, like Chili Cheese Tots or fresh-cut, twice-fried Fries with hausmade cheese sauce, cheddar, haus chili, and diced onions; beer-battered Onion Rings; and Sweet Potato Fries. To end on a sweet note, shakes and malts, cookies and other treats are also available.
To complement the main offerings, diners can select from a thoughtful list of beers and wines on tap.
The restaurant boasts eight craft drafts with a heavy emphasis on local SoCal breweries, including Hangar 24, Golden Road Brewing and Strand Brewing going by the pint. Canned beers like Fat Tire, Pabst Blue Ribbonand Modelo will be served up in koozies—a nod to backyard summer BBQs.
After ordering at the counter, diners can gather around communal-style tables outfitted with bar stools or at cozier tables that span the perimeter of the 2700-square-foot restaurant.
Striking red and black accents enliven both interior and exterior, bringing a modern sensibility to the classic concept.
“It's incredible to see how the idea for Dog Haus has transformed since we opened our first restaurant in Pasadena in 2010,” adds Dog Haus Partner Quasim Riaz. "We are proud to bring Dog Haus home to Canoga Park and look forward to becoming part of this community."
