EATING L.A.— The Taste is Labor Day Weekend: 4 Days of Locally- Oriented Restaurants, plus Jonathan Gold
While this weekend is the glitzy L.A. Food and Wine festival packed with celebrity chefs from out of town and dozens of events, next weekend's The Taste has a somewhat more local flavor.
Unspooling over Labor Day weekend with a manageable five events, it's hosted by the L.A. Times -- meaning a chance to meet food writers including Jonathan Gold, Russ Parsons, Betty Hallock, Jessica Gelt et al. Co-hosts are L.A.'s own star chefs Michael Cimarusti (Providence, Connie & Ted's) and Sang Yoon (Father's Office, Lukshon). Here's what's on tap at Paramoount Studios:
Opening night, Friday Aug. 30: This is the deluxe event, with restaurants including Fishing with Dynamite, Plan Check, Paiche, Angelini Osteria, plenty of Don Julio tequila and a Beatles tribute band.
Saturday, Aug. 31: Field to Fork: Wine tastings, a secret wine cellar, and a Sustainable Seafood panel are highlights with restaurants including Momed, Canele, Farmshop, Good Girl Dinette and Loteria.
Saturday night: Flavors of L.A.: Hosted by Jonathan Gold and Sang Yoon, this one seems worth the $65 ticket, plus it's cooler at night (there's a discount if you're an L.A. Times subscriber.) There's mixology and Pop-up restaurant panels plus tastes from Allumette, Chichen Itza, Lukshon, Superba and cooking demonstrations from Josef Centeno, Bryant Ng and Sang Yoon.
Sunday, Sept. 1, Labor Day Block Party: The L.A. Times test kitchen's Noelle Carter plus Mozza's Nancy Silverton host this event that welcomes families ($5 for kids!) with a panel on the masters of competition barbecue, Steve Lopez's Firehouse Cookoff and tastes from restaurants including Coni' Seafood, Dog Haus, Horse Thief BBQ, L&E Oyster and Haven Gastropub.
Sunday night, Cocktail Confidential: Mixologist Matthew Biancaniello, Betty Hallock and Jessica Gelt host an adult-oriented evening with restaurants including Cliff's Edge, Bulgarini Gelato, Takami Sushi and Mexikosher. The town's top cocktailians provide demonstrations, including Julian Cox and bartenders from Ink, Hinoki & the Bird and 1886.
