OC MOM DINING — Ultimate Hot Dog Experience at Dog Haus — by Shelby Barone
We dined as a guest of Dog Haus. I have to be “frank” when I say that the all-new Dog Haus restaurant that just opened at the Westfield Mainplace shopping center is the ultimate foodie experience. Guests will experience hot dogs, burgers and sausages like never before with their innovative food creations.
I brought my three kids to see what all the hype is about only to discover one of our new favorite restaurants. My original plan was to order the kids something simple from the menu but they insisted on taking their taste buds on an epicurean adventure by trying their gourmet menu items.
My older son went “downtown” with the downtown dog that came with a smoked bacon wrapped dog, caramelized onions, roasted bell peppers, mayo, mustard and ketchup inside of a soft sweet Hawaiian roll. He ate the hot dog so fast that I barely got a chance to take a small bite before it was gone.
Since I was in the mood for something a little spicy we ordered the Old Town Dog. I never knew that a hot dog could pack this much kick but it was all because of the roasted jalapeños, chipotle aioli, cotija cheese and caramelized onions on top of the smoked bacon wrapped dog. All I have to say is that this hot dog it “HOT!”
While I had second guesses about “The Pig and the Fig,” it ended up being my favorite for the night. The emmentaler cheese-stuffed sausage came topped with fig-onion relish, wild arugula, mustard aioli and sliced almonds. It was sweet and savory all together inside of a soft Hawaiian role. This is my go-to menu item when dining at Dog Haus paired with a side order of cheese fries.
It was an evening full of surprises as my picky eater fell in love with the most unusual menu item we ordered. “The Little Mule” burger that came topped with white American cheese, cotija cheese, haus-made tomatillo sauce, chipotle aioli, avocado and fried egg. My little guy devoured the burger that was made with 100% natural black Angus beef that’s ground fresh daily.
Since we are all about families here at OC Mom Dining…we took the kid’s meal for a test run. For $5.99 kids can pick two sliders, fries or tater tots and a soda drink. My daughter loved the hot dog slider while my son enjoyed every bite of the burger slider. If you have younger kids (under the age of 3) then you’ll probably be able to have them share one kid’s meal.
The next time that your family is shopping at the Westfield MainPlace shopping center or spending the day at the Discovery Science Center, plan to have lunch or dinner at Dog Haus. The pricing is very affordable, and families are guaranteed to leave full.
Dog Haus is located at 2800 N Main Street #197 in Santa Ana. Learn more about them online at doghaus.com or on Instagram @doghausdogs.
